Forever in My Heart
By Tsangyang Gyatso
so many years slipped away
you’ve been living in my heart
I’ve dropped heaven and earth
even dropped everything
but never dropped you
gradual enlightenment
or sudden enlightenment
except for life and death
what isn’t a trivial matter
I sit alone on the top of Mount Sumeru
seeing through the clouds in the vast sky
one person plays the flute in the snow
the other listens with a knowing heart
I travel all roads in the world
walking against time for nothing
but an encounter with you this life
I sit in silence under the bodhi tree
only a dream between you and me
finally I see you in the forest
close enough to touch, yet we can
only face each other in silence
this life and the next life
a call of Buddha is the other shore
why can I only love you for a while
but can’t love you all my life
filled with infinite thoughts of love
I nourish my heart in Buddha Dharma
every time I hold up
the precious banner
praying for all the beings
the ubiquitous bodhisattva
scatters six-syllable mantra:
Om mani padme hum
Om mani padme hum
Om mani padme hum
Buddhist music, white clouds
dreams and traces on the heart
cultivate stillness in silence
cultivate observation in motion
sitting in a full-lotus posture
in and out of the Zen meditation
it’s been thousands of hills and rills
through thousands of years
after the Zen enlightenment
all hills before my eyes turn green
and all rills turn clear
when lotus flowers bloom, the world
is filled with the smiles of Bodhisattvas
the perfect life’s supported by endless love
one heart and the other overlap
one soul and the other harmonize
then vagrancy will come to an end
and fragments will turn into a whole
if retreat can be done in a drop of tear
this moment won’t be gloomy anymore
this life won’t be spent in vain anymore

例如,“so many years slipped away, you’ve been living in my heart”将“这么多年你一直在我心口幽居”的深情内敛表达得淋漓尽致;而“gradual enlightenment or sudden enlightenment, except for life and death what isn’t a trivial matter”则体现了诗人对世间万象超脱的看法,突出了生死之外世事皆为过客的主题。
同时,在描述自然景象与心境变化时,如“我独坐须弥山巅,将万里浮云一眼看穿”,译文“I sit alone on the top of Mount Sumeru, seeing through the clouds in the vast sky”成功地传达出那种静观宇宙、洞悉一切的豁达与洞察力。
尤其在结尾部分,关于轮回、解脱与爱的深刻阐述,如“one heart and the other overlap, one soul and the other harmonize, then vagrancy will come to an end, and fragments will turn into a whole”,不仅展现了译者对原文理解之深入,也彰显了其文学造诣之高。
